Both exams test the four core competencies: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. In addition, there is a section on linguistic competence that tests grammar and vocabulary. However, the specific structure and weighting differ.

Are CELI and CILS identical?

No, they are not identical. The most important difference lies in the modular system and the opportunities for retaking the exam. In the CELI exam, you must achieve a minimum score in each module in order to receive the entire certificate. If you fail one or more modules, you can retake them within one year without having to retake the parts you have already passed.

The CILS exam offers more flexibility in this regard: passed exam sections remain valid for up to 18 months. This means you can take your time to focus on your weaker areas and only need to retake those sections. This is particularly useful if, for example, you are very good at speaking but still have difficulties with writing.

Another difference lies in the orientation. CELI is considered somewhat more academic and formal, with a focus on linguistic precision. CILS places more emphasis on practical communication and social integration. In practice, however, both thoroughly test all skills.

Is CILS easier than CELI?

There is no general answer to this question. The difficulty depends on your personal strengths. If you are significantly better in some areas than in others, CILS may be easier for you because you do not have to repeat parts that you have already passed. This takes the pressure off and gives you time to focus on improving specific areas.

However, if you are equally strong in all areas and would prefer to complete the exam in one go, CELI may be the better choice. The shorter validity period of the modules can also be motivating, as you can complete the exam more quickly.

Which is better, CELI or CILS?
