Preparation & Registration

The Swiss Digital Language Test (SDS) is a fully digital German exam covering CEFR levels A1 to B2. It serves as official proof of language proficiency for naturalization procedures, residence and settlement permits, and as proof of German language skills for authorities and employers.

Registration for the SDS exam takes place via a recognized test center. After selecting the exam location and date, you complete the registration online at the respective center and receive a confirmation by email.

Yes. The SDS can be taken as a complete exam or in modules. You can register for just the written part (reading and writing) or just the oral part (listening and speaking). Individual language skills cannot be tested separately.

The complete SDS exam costs CHF 239. The written and oral parts each cost CHF 150.

No. The SDS is designed to be user-friendly and can be completed without any special technical knowledge.

Examination procedure

The SDS is conducted digitally on a tablet and is adaptive. This means that the difficulty level of the tasks automatically adjusts to your language level.

Depending on the chosen exam format, the four skills of reading, listening, writing, and speaking, or the corresponding modules, are tested.

The maximum test time for the entire exam is 2 hours and 45 minutes. Including the introduction and organizational instructions, you should plan on around 3 hours and 30 minutes. For modular exams, the duration is correspondingly shorter.

Examination day – What do I need to bear in mind?

You must bring valid official photo identification (e.g., passport, identity card, or foreigner's identity card). Participation is not possible without valid identification.

No aids such as dictionaries or electronic devices are permitted during the exam.

The exam takes place in a quiet environment. All technical equipment is provided by the test center.

After the examination

The results are usually sent within a few working days, usually within 48 hours of the test.

Yes. If you have doubts about your result, you can request a written review of your test within the deadline set by the test center.

Yes. The SDS can be repeated as often as desired.

Certificate – Recognition & Use

The SDS is recognized as an official language certificate by the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM). The certificate can be used for naturalization procedures as well as for residence and settlement permits and serves as proof of German language skills to authorities and employers.

If lost, a duplicate can usually be requested from the test center for a fee up to two years after the test date.
