A 5-star experience (for any aspiring language-learning masochist :D ). + The staff at ILS-Bern are wonderfully supportive (which is a fantastic psychological tactic to soften you up before the grammatical beating). + The free coffee (perfectly fuels the pre-exam anxiety spiral). + The location (is great—just a 5–10-minute walk from Bern Hauptbahnhof... which is the perfect amount of time to question all the life choices that led you to this exam, yet not enough time to actually escape them. It’s convenient—like a cage. Obviously. Its prime location near the station means you can’t even use “the train was late” as a final, desperate lie.) + From the prep courses: The “CRASH” course started with a review of exam answers I’d already seen at home. For a moment, I felt like I’d paid 149 francs to have my own anxieties read back to me in a group setting. It was like going to a therapist who just nods and says, “Yes, and how did that dative case make you feel?” But then, the teacher—a man with the calm aura of someone who has witnessed the birth and death of entire grammatical constellations—began unveiling the tricks. These weren’t language lessons; this was linguistic special ops. Let’s be clear. You don’t take a “crash course” to learn German. You take it to learn how to pass an exam. The teacher understood this beautiful, cynical truth. He didn’t waste time on Goethe’s poetry; he taught us how to surgically extract the correct answer from a paragraph designed by a committee to make you question your own name. The initial review of old answers was just the warm-up, confirming that yes, we are all equally lost. The real value was learning the cheat codes to the simulation. — The only thing I can seriously complain about is that the restroom on the second floor was locked. The locked restroom, I assume, is the advanced C2-level challenge in bladder control and existential panic. I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys psychological thrillers set in a language school. Want a workaround? Go to another floor.

Samuel Kalu Okebe I took the Telc A2 and B1 exams and had a fantastic experience at ILS Basel. All the staff—both during the crash course and on the day of my test—were friendly and helpful, and they answered my questions.

I took the FIDE Crash Course and then the B1 FIDE test with ILS. The crash course was helpful and very well organized; it was a good investment. All the material is available online, and the website is excellent—but having the explanations and the chance to get my questions answered was invaluable. We were part of a group, and we basically went through what the test would entail. It was easy to book the test online, and since it’s offered every week, you don’t have to wait for months—plus, it’s in Basel, so it’s easy to get to. The venue was clean, and the staff welcomed me with instructions on the day of the test. The instructions were clear, and I thought it was a thoughtful touch to have my first name displayed on the screen so I knew I was in the right place. There are lockers where you can store your valuables, especially your smartwatch and phone (no cheating!). The test is the test—go study! Don’t blame ILS if you haven’t studied 😊 The institute is professional and transparent. Test results are usually available after 3–4 weeks, and I was pleasantly surprised to receive mine in the mail after just 12 days! I’ve been recommending ILS to friends and family based on my experience and their professionalism.
